1. Persons who lawfully possessed Class I wild animals before June 25, 1991 shall obtain an annual personal possession permit to keep such Class I wild animals. In order to obtain a personal possession licence, such persons must comply with all the provisions of this Part. After 25 June 1991, no new animals may be taken into possession on the basis of a personal possession licence. Persons who have been in legal possession of one (1) or more Class I wildlife species since June 25, 1991 may maintain the lineage of such species up to a maximum of three (3) animals per species. Persons who are in legal possession of the offspring of such Class I wild animals must have a maximum of twelve (12) months from the date of birth of such offspring to obtain appropriate permits for such offspring or to dispose of such offspring in the State through an appropriate commercial propagator or otherwise authorized by law. The provisions of this Section shall apply only to persons who have been in legal possession of Class I wild animals since 25 June 1991 and shall not be construed as authorizing the new personal possession of Class I wild animals. Some states technically allow you to keep a fox, but that make it essentially impossible. For example, Maine and Delaware legally allow you to keep foxes, but refuse to issue the necessary permits. In other states, it is legal to own a fox, but illegal to import one. There is a good chance that there are no fox breeders in the state, making it virtually impossible to legally possess. States where you can legally own a fox: Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Tennessee, and Wyoming.
Even if you are sure that you are legally allowed to own a pet fox, you may still encounter legal problems defending this right, especially if a stranger reports you. So it`s best to keep your fox`s existence relatively calm. Here is a brief breakdown of the areas where you can legally own certain species of foxes: a) Before a person is allowed to take, transport or possess birds of prey for falconry purposes, that person must first obtain a falconry permit in accordance with the rules and regulations published by the Commission. There aren`t many places to buy foxes, and there are well-known breeders in Indiana, Texas, and Ohio. To import a fox from outside the state, you`ll also need to get a one-time import permit, which is likely given to pet owners for the cost of $25. Each household is only allowed a maximum of 6 native wild animals (foxes, squirrels, raccoons and a few other species). Non-native fox species require proof that they were legally acquired and a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian, which is reasonable.
