For reasons like these, I once thought that exercising among other women seemed like the perfect way to mitigate gymshyism and harassment. And for many, women-only gyms may seem like a godsend. However, as I got older, I realized that it wasn`t always that easy. Training only for women definitely offers benefits and a level of comfort that I longed for. But when you`re trying to deal with feelings of bullying, shame, or undesirable at the gym, other factors come into play. “The gym operator must do its best to end discrimination in the form of harassment,” said Dan Barrett, legal director of the ACLU of Connecticut. “He can`t just say, `Oh, the solution is that we create a training room for people who are being harassed. Really, what we`re looking for and what gyms like Curves have tried to offer is a space where we can walk in, work out and not think. Don`t think about other people`s opinions or even our own opinions about our bodies. At the end of the day, we`re just trying to do something good for our physical and mental health. If you can find that in a Curves gym, then great.
But if you haven`t found it, it`s definitely there. And maybe you owe it to the legacy of Curves. Ben Klein, an attorney for GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, known as GLAD, said his organization has no position on women`s areas of training, but opposes a general consumer protection rule that could unintentionally discriminate on the basis of gender in other cases. I would prefer a gym without other people, men or women. It is legal to have a “social club” business that is discriminatory. This includes discrimination based on sex, race, religion or anything else (e.g., being called Bob). Since you pay a membership fee for the gym, it counts as a social club. They also often see it in spas and salons. Most of these companies have a connected company or a “sister company” that caters to both genders or the opposite sex.
In the decision, Robinson wrote that there is no implied exception to customer privacy that is subject to the prohibition of sex discrimination in the state`s Public Housing Act.
