Success in law school requires students to develop the analytical skills necessary to solve specific legal problems through the application of general principles of law. For Young Women first-year students, we offer small group workshops (“labs”) throughout the fall semester of the first year. Student staff run the labs, which are designed to introduce basic academic skills such as case briefing, rule analysis and synthesis, sketching, and exam writing. Each JD module of the first year is assigned to a specific laboratory and fellow. Labs are optional, but students in recent years have benefited the most from regular participation, as each session builds on previous material. We also offer labs during the spring semester as students continue to practice and refine these important skills. In addition to laboratories, fellows organize consultation hours and offer opportunities for individual feedback on Praxis-Hypos. Fellows are available to answer questions about law schools and study strategies. For LL.M. students, tutors for the required Fundamentals of U.S. Law course provide office hours and opportunities for individual commentary on writing assignments.

Tutors are available to answer questions about law courses and study strategies. We also offer various workshops and presentations designed throughout the year specifically for LL.M. students. This course is designed to improve students` ability to deconstruct legal rules, explain and evaluate the meaning of facts, thoroughly support legal conclusions, and effectively organize content. These skills are crucial for the application of the law to hypothetical questions typical of law schools and bar exams. The practical learning methodology used in the course includes analytical and written work in class in individual and group contexts. Blewett School of Law`s commitment to the academic success of our students begins in the summer prior to Year 1L and continues until the successful completion of the post-law exam and includes the following programs, courses and services: ASP in First Year is designed to support all 1L students, not just those who are struggling. Few students intuitively possess the skills that are unique to the success of law school. Everyone will make mistakes, but ASP helps students avoid big mistakes from the start. Just ask our student mentors who attribute their academic success to asp participation when they were 1L students.

The Academic Success Program (ASP) shows students how to develop the skills needed to excel in the first year of law school and beyond. As 1L students realize early on, law school is not just an extension of the Undergraduate College. Law school introduces students to a completely different way of learning, studying, and even thinking. ASP helps students develop the skills needed to effectively prepare for law classes, written assignments, and exams. ASP also helps students cope with the new demands that the first-year experience imposes on them. During the fall semester, ASP holds a three-hour practical exam designed to give 1L students an overview of the law school`s final exam and learn how it differs from the baccalaureate exam experience. We are available to meet students in person to answer specific questions, review concepts and skills, discuss learning strategies and exam preparation, help with time management, and more. Young female students can schedule a meeting via our online appointment system.

LL.M. students should contact their graduate program advisor. We also offer workshops on topics such as time management and taking legal exams. The objectives of the ASP are as follows: During the whole week (Monday to Friday) preceding the 1L orientation week, we offer an introduction to the teaching methods and skills of the Faculty of Law to a small group of young female students. Young first-year students will receive a letter with information on how to apply in late May or early June. This includes personal care, which is an essential academic and legal skill.

The ASP completes the Curiculum of the Faculty of Law. The goal of asp is to help students develop the skills needed to succeed in law school and the bar exam. These skills include, in part, the ability to read and understand the law (critical reading and case presentation), organize and apply the law (plan) and apply it (exam writing), and time and stress management. Ben Alba, Director of Academic Success and Barbreaker, is also available to answer students` questions and concerns about academic success and transition to law school. The Academic Success Program (CIP) reflects our commitment to supporting the academic success of our students throughout their legal careers. ASP recognizes that law students with different cultural, educational and professional backgrounds come here and seeks to transform all UM law students into independent lifelong learners. The Academic Success Program (PSA) complements the first-year program by helping students develop the academic and analytical skills needed to succeed in law school. All 1Ls are assigned to a small ASP group when oriented.

Your ASP group meets weekly throughout the year. Each asp meeting focuses on a different academic skill, such as reading and briefing, outline, exam preparation, etc.
