Centers in Classical Studies, French, German, Global Studies, and Hispanic Studies require a minor and general elective course to meet graduation requirements. The current FLL, Hispanic Studies Education Major, Mariel Ortega Guerrero, received the Mitchell-Buck Fellowship from the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina! This is the second time in the past five years that a major in our Foreign Language Educator Preparation Program has received this prestigious scholarship from our state`s professional association. This is a special honor for our program, because one of the language educators honored by this scholarship was a professor at THE ECU and because FLANC awards this scholarship each year to ONE student in his final year in a preparatory program for foreign language teachers throughout the state. “It really means a lot to me,” Guerrero said. “I`m so grateful to be part of a program that is really there for their students. I couldn`t have done it without Professor Laura Levi Altstaedter.

On March 26, 2019, about 60 FLL students visited the food and pancake preparation, with an introduction and demonstration from the French faculty: Dr. Medevielle, Dr. Rush, and Dr. Larkin at the Ledonia Wright Student Center. Students could choose between sweet pancakes (sweet pancakes with honey, nutella, sugar and lemon or jam) and savory pancakes (salted cheese pancakes). It was a lot of fun! “We had to cancel the trip and it`s not quite as you`d think we were all ready to go and we cancelled it because of the war in Ukraine,” Wilmes said. It was more than the trip was not properly recorded because people were afraid to take a trip to that part of the world where these things are happening. [Dr.] Wilmes, who is an associate professor of Russian studies at the ECU, expressed how disappointing it was to cancel. It is with a heavy heart that the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures announces the death of Dr. Frédéric Fladenmuller on May 25. Dr. Fladenmuller taught French, Spanish and literature at ECU for many years until his retirement in 2017, when he became Professor Emeritus. He was known for his keen sense of humor, his scientific interest in all literature (but especially Proust), and his eternal smile.

Frédéric is a pillar of the FLL, he always will be, and we will miss him deeply. Dr. Elena Murenina presented her research paper “Transposing Turgenev`s Play: Vera Glagoleva`s Two Women (2014) within the Literary Adaptation Discourse” during a panel on “Contemporary Russian Film Adaptations: Redefining Russian Classics in 2009-2017” at the ASEEES Annual National Convention november 23-26 in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Susanne Lenné Jones` Holocaust class had the opportunity to organize a live seminar with Adam Schonfeld, a lecturer at the Berlin Holocaust Documentation Center Topography of Terror. The class spent 3 days visiting the site and analyzing archival images and documents held in the Topography of Terror. The analysis revealed the radicalization of terror orchestrated by the SS headquarters, which was once housed in the location where the Topography of Terror now stands. Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Students must take LATN or GRK 1001-2004 to meet the foreign language requirements for the bachelor`s degree.

Non-BA double majors who do not have foreign language requirements or a requirement of less than 12 s.h. or BA majors who complete these questions through another language must still take LATN or GRK 1001-2004, but they can count courses to the classic electives below. The requirement to prove knowledge of Latin or Ancient Greek at the 2004 level applies only to the emphasis on classical studies. Dr. Paul Fallon, Associate Professor of Spanish, and Dr. Justin Wilmes, Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Program of Russian Studies, were honored this summer with a THCAS Summer Research Award to conduct research. Dr. Wilmes` research topic is “Re-Constituting Truth: Documentary Cinema as Discursive Battleground in Contemporary Russia.” Dr. Fallon`s research topic is: “A critical moment? Posting the Border” (it will serve as a conclusion to the book Time on the Line: Negotiating Community at the U.S.-Mexican Border between NAFTA and the Net).

Three of our incredible faculty members, Dr. Birgit Jensen, Dr. Almitra Medina and Dr. Laura Levi Altstaedter, recently visited the Palacio Bosch, the Ambassador`s residence in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of their Inter-American Development Bank/Argentine Ministry of Education project! Students specialising in foreign languages and literatures at THE ECU develop cultural competences by learning to communicate effectively (reading, writing, speaking) in another language. They acquire the ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people from cultures with different worldviews or belief systems, and engage in lifelong learning. Students critically analyze different forms of cultural expression and develop a necessary intercultural sensitivity in a variety of professional environments.
