Last year, legal aid helped more than 17,300 people in more than 6,600 cases. And thousands more have been supported by Legal Aid`s awareness-raising, education and general advocacy. As the only provider of civil legal aid in Northeast Ohio (our service area covers Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Lorain counties), legal aid plays a unique and vital role in our region. With 117 years of experience and growing partnerships with organizations like Thompson Hine, we guide our clients on the path to stability, strength and hope. As Executive Director of East River Legal Services, Ms. Thompson increased the program`s capacity, resulting in a 300% increase in the number of clients served each year. He also developed a new fundraising strategy, increased program revenues, and successfully lobbied for the South Dakota Legislature, which allowed the government to fund legal aid, a first in South Dakota`s history. Prior to joining East River Legal Services, Thompson practiced law for Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid for over 11 years, leading a large number of cases and co-chairing the interdisciplinary project team on domestic violence and sexual assault. Thompson has appeared before the Minnesota Court of Appeals and participated in the formation of the Stearns County Domestic Violence Court. He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law. As Executive Director, Ms. Thompson will continue Legal Aid`s mission to provide free, high-quality civil law advice, representation and education to vulnerable residents of Broward and Collier counties. Prior to this role, Mr.
Thompson was Executive Director of East River Legal Services, a non-profit organization that provides free legal advice to more than 46,000 people living in poverty in eastern South Dakota. “The promotions for Debra and Carol are well deserved and bring experience, exceptional patience and sincere compassion to the legal profession, especially when working with our clients,” said Reynolds. “We know they will have a very positive impact in their new leadership roles. Koprowski previously served as Regional Director of Advocacy for legal aid programs in Broward and Collier counties from 2010 to 2021. She supervises, supervises, advises and advises litigation lawyers and paralegals. In addition, it takes care of administrative and project tasks for programs. Previously, Debra focused on senior law, representing individuals over sixty years of age in foreclosure, deportation and fraud cases at Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA). In 2019, Debra was named Employee of the Year by LAS and CCLA.

Mr. Thompson succeeds Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. (Tony) Karrat, who retired on January 31, 2022, after more than four decades of outstanding service to the organization. In addition, Debra Koprowski was promoted to Deputy Executive Director of Broward County Legal Aid (LASBC) and Carol A. O`Callaghan was appointed Deputy Executive Director of Collier County Legal Aid (LASCC). Debra Koprowski and Carol A. O`Callaghan promoted to Assistant Executive Directors Last year, Thompson Hine held a 54% stake in individual support. We also worked together on a CLE for access to justice. O`Callaghan joined the Collier County Legal Aid Service in 2005 as a family law clerk and became senior counsel at LASCC in 2010. Carol is the past president of the Collier County Bar Association – Young Lawyers Section and the Collier County Women`s Bar Association (CCWBA). The Florida Association of Women Lawyers inducted her into the Law Leaders class in 2015.
The CCWBA named her Lawyer of the Year 2015-2016. In 2021, she was named to Naples County`s Naples 100 list as one of Collier County`s Most Influential Business Leaders. A three-time Gator, she received her BA (Honors), MA and JD from the University of Florida. Legal Aid is proud to partner with Thompson Hine, LLP.
