All students must complete and pass the four core subjects, Property Transfer, Private Client, Litigation, Business Environment and Ethics, as well as the reflective journal exercises in the first semester before moving on to electives in the second semester. The course begins in September with a comprehensive introductory curriculum that focuses on skill-based exercises such as negotiation, interviews, and teamwork. The introduction, which aims to give an overview of actual legal practice, includes a visit to Aberdeen Sheriff`s Court with lectures from a sheriff, lawyers and tax specialists, as well as the opportunity to attend court hearings. The Aberdeen DPLP prepared me for legal practice as the schedule reflected normal office hours, we had tight working hours and were encouraged to work in groups. As an elective course, the course is designed for students who wish to pursue a legal career in this specialty, whether in private legal practice, public law service or the Crown Prosecution Service. The design of the course is to teach lessons in a small interactive group where participation, role-playing and verbal feedback are key characteristics. Video recording is used as an important teaching tool. Students will have the opportunity to observe and critique demonstrations of advocacy skills. We have close ties to the legal profession in Aberdeen and beyond. Many of our additional learning activities are taught by practicing lawyers, so you can learn more about the realities of legal practice.

You study all of the required modules and three from a list of options that includes employment practice and advanced civil litigation. You will be taught by lawyers in practice and learn through practical lessons and materials. You will study the remaining mandatory modules and one or two elective modules with a focus on learning the types of work that lawyers do in practice. With the diploma in Professional Legal Practice, you will take the first step in professional training to become a lawyer in Scotland. The second step is to complete the 2-year legal internship, which allows for a full qualification as a lawyer in Scotland. Our goal is to ensure that our students leave Aberdeen as trainee lawyers “fit for purpose” and are prepared for the challenges of their articling from day one. Important mediation skills are also covered, such as client communication, design, negotiation and transactional research.
