Here is a history (mostly focused on the United States) of notable events in legal tender law: Legal tender refers to all U.S. coins and currencies issued by the government. U.S. dollars in cash are also a valid form of legal tender. Nevertheless, federal laws do not require a seller to accept cash as legal tender for the payment of goods or services that have been provided. This allows companies to establish their own policies on whether or not to accept cash as legal tender. Legal tender also includes Federal Reserve notes as well as notes of Federal Reserve banks and national banking associations for the purpose of settling public and private debts, duties, levies and taxes. Legal tender generally does not include personal cheques, credit cards or other general forms of cashless payments. In some cases, foreign currency may be accepted as legal tender.

In addition, legal tender may only be used to repay debts. Legal tender can be defined as the currency of a nation in the form of paper money and coins. Legal tender is considered valid for the payment of any financial obligation. Nationally recognized legal tender varies from country to country. In the People`s Republic of China, the official renminbi currency serves as unlimited legal tender for all transactions. The law requires that any public institution or individual may not refuse to use money to settle public or private domestic debts. [23] The main purpose of this law is to ensure national acceptance of the U.S. currency in accordance with constitutional language, which reserves to Congress the power to create a single currency that has equal value to all United States. Although the law provides that U.S. money is legal tender and can be accepted for the payment of debts, it does not require the acceptance of cash payments, nor does it provide that the acceptance of cash cannot be restricted. [48] Note that none of these fees have anything to do with “legal tender” or restrictions on individuals who transact in the currency of their choice.

In the case of the euro, coins and banknotes of former national currencies were sometimes legal tender from 1 January 1999 to 28 February 2002. Legally, these notes and coins were considered non-decimal subdivisions of the euro. [Citation needed] Cheques and credit cards are not really legal tender. They are simply the legal tender you have in your bank account or are available from the credit card company. The legal tender of the United States, the U.S. dollar, is considered legal for use in many other countries. Often, countries where less of their own currency is available accept national legal rates such as the dollar and the euro. Legal tender laws determine which currency is legally acceptable as payment of debts, fees or taxes. Legal tender laws deal specifically with the currency that must be accepted when paying a debt.

In the United States, legal tender laws do not require companies to accept dollars as a means of payment. For example, some businesses may not want to deal with high denominations and some businesses may only accept credit card payments. The Decimal Currency Act 1970 regulated legal tender before the introduction of the euro and laid down provisions similar to those of UK law (all inherited from the old UK law), namely: coins with a volume of more than 10 pence became legal tender for a payment not exceeding £10, coins with a volume not exceeding £10 became legal tender for a payment not exceeding £5, and bronze coins were legal tender for payment of up to 20 pence. Legal tender is used exclusively for the secured settlement of debts and does not affect a party`s right to refuse service to a transaction. [38] Definition: Legal tender is a legally recognized payment instrument used to fulfill a financial obligation. In other words, it is an economic means accepted by the legal system. Legal tender is a form of money that the courts must recognize as a satisfactory payment for any monetary debt. [1] Each jurisdiction determines what is legal tender, but in essence, it is anything that extinguishes the debt when it is offered (“offered”) to pay a debt.

There is no obligation for the creditor to accept the payment offered, but offering the payment in legal tender relieves the debt. The history of banknotes in New Zealand was much more complex.
